Beaujolais wine is shaped by granite rich soils, gentle hills and a mild climate that help Gamay develop bright fruit, freshness and floral notes. This creates lively, expressive reds that link the region to the elegant traditions of southern Burgundy.
Gamay dominates Beaujolais, producing everything from light Beaujolais Nouveau to structured cru wines. Small amounts of Chardonnay are also grown, offering fresh whites that complement the region’s red wine identity.
The ten crus, including Morgon, Fleurie, Moulin à Vent and Brouilly, highlight the region’s diversity. Each cru has its own character, from floral and delicate to rich and powerful, giving wine lovers a chance to explore distinct expressions of Gamay.
Many cru Beaujolais wines age beautifully, especially from Morgon, Moulin à Vent and Côte de Brouilly. Their structure, acidity and mineral character allow them to develop depth over time, offering an alternative to Burgundy and Loire reds.
Beaujolais pairs well with charcuterie, roast chicken, grilled meats and soft cheeses, while lighter styles complement salads and simple dishes. These pairings reflect the region’s fresh, versatile character and highlight connections between French cuisine and Gamay’s vibrant flavours.
