The signature grape of South Africa is Pinotage, a unique red variety created in 1925 by crossing Cinsault with Pinot Noir. It produces a distinctive red wine known for its deep colour and bold, smoky, and earthy flavour profile. Beyond Pinotage, South Africa is globally celebrated for its exceptional Chenin Blanc, locally known as Steen. This versatile grape thrives in the Cape, ranging from crisp, fruit-forward styles to rich, oak-matured wines that rival the finest examples from the Loire Valley.
The Wine of Origin (W.O.) system is a legal framework established in 1973 to protect the geographical authenticity of South African wine. When a label displays a W.O. designation, it guarantees that 100 percent of the grapes used to make that wine were grown within that specific delimited area, such as Stellenbosch or Paarl. The system also regulates claims regarding vintage and grape variety, ensuring that consumers are receiving a genuine product that reflects the specific terroir of its origin.
The Cape Doctor is a powerful, dry south-easterly wind that blows across the Western Cape during the spring and summer months. It plays a vital role in viticulture by clearing the air of pollution and, more importantly, reducing humidity in the vineyards. This natural ventilation prevents the development of fungal diseases and pests, allowing for more organic and sustainable farming practices. The cooling effect of the wind also slows down the ripening process, helping the grapes retain a vibrant acidity and fresh fruit character.
The Old Vine Project (OVP) is a world-leading initiative dedicated to preserving South Africa’s heritage of vines that are over 35 years old. These ancient vines naturally produce lower yields of smaller, highly concentrated grapes, resulting in wines with extraordinary depth, complexity, and texture. Bottles certified by the OVP feature a distinct "Certified Heritage Vineyards" seal, indicating the exact year the vineyard was planted. These wines are prized for their refined structure and ability to express the site's history with great savoury detail.
A traditional South African BBQ, known as a braai, involves intensely smoky, charred flavours that require a wine with significant structure. A bold, smoky Pinotage or a robust Cabernet Sauvignon blend is the classic choice for grilled red meats and spicy boerewors sausages. For those who prefer white wine, a rich, barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc possesses the weight and complexity to stand up to grilled chicken or buttery lobster tails. If the menu includes lighter salads or seafood, a crisp, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc from the cooler coastal regions provides a refreshing, zesty contrast.
