Spicy Red

The Rhone Valley is known for producing bold expressive reds, particularly Syrah in the north and Grenache based blends in the south. The region also makes aromatic whites from Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Its combination of tradition, climate and varied terroir makes it one of France’s most influential wine regions.
Northern Rhone wines are dominated by Syrah for reds and Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne for whites. The Southern Rhone uses Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault in its blends, along with Clairette, Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc for whites. These grapes reflect the region’s Mediterranean heritage and diverse microclimates.
Northern Rhone reds typically show black pepper, blackberry, violet and smoked meat with firm structure. Southern Rhone wines are richer and warmer, offering flavours of raspberry, plum, herbs and spice. Whites range from floral and aromatic Viognier to fuller bodied Marsanne and Roussanne blends with stone fruit and honeyed notes.
The Rhone Valley is divided into the Northern Rhone and the Southern Rhone. Key northern appellations include Côte Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and Condrieu. The south includes Châteauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel and Côtes du Rhône. Each area has its own identity shaped by climate, soil and grape varieties.
Northern Rhone Syrah pairs well with roast lamb, beef, game, mushrooms and peppered dishes. Southern Rhone blends suit grilled meats, stews, Mediterranean cuisine and herb driven plates. Rhone whites pair with seafood, poultry, creamy sauces and soft cheeses, offering both freshness and richness.
The Rhone Valley’s terroir varies dramatically from north to south. The Northern Rhone has steep granite slopes and a continental climate that produce structured aromatic Syrah and refined whites. The Southern Rhone is warmer with limestone, clay and galet covered soils that create ripe generous blends with spice and herbal notes. This diversity gives Rhone wines their distinctive character and wide stylistic range.
