Bobal typically shows flavours of blackberry, blueberry, cherry and plum with notes of violets, herbs and gentle spice. It has naturally high acidity and a smooth texture, making it both refreshing and expressive. Old vine Bobal can offer deeper flavours with cocoa, earth and savoury complexity.
Bobal is primarily grown in Spain, especially in the Utiel Requena region of Valencia. It is also found in Manchuela and in smaller quantities across eastern Spain. The grape thrives in hot, dry climates and is one of the most widely planted red varieties in the country.
Bobal and Garnacha share juicy fruit and Mediterranean character, but Bobal tends to have higher acidity and a slightly firmer structure. Garnacha is often softer and more openly fruity. Both grapes are key to modern Spanish reds, offering freshness and approachability.
Bobal pairs well with grilled meats, tapas, paella, roasted vegetables and Mediterranean dishes. Its acidity and fruit complement Spanish cuisine, and it works well with vegetarian dishes featuring peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms and herbs. Richer styles pair nicely with stews and barbecued dishes.
