Description
Description
Kopke 30 Year Old Tawny Port is a masterclass in time and patience, crafted by the world’s oldest Port house. Sourced from the steep, terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley, the traditional Douro varieties gain extraordinary complexity through decades of oxidative aging in seasoned oak casks. This meticulous process transforms the primary fruit into a sophisticated tapestry of dried fruits and spice, embodying the prestigious heritage of Kopke.
Why You'll Love It
This is a journey through decades of winemaking history, representing the pinnacle of the Kopke blending art. The high-altitude schist soils of the Cima Corgo provide the structural backbone, while thirty years of wood aging soften the wine into a silken, amber nectar. You’ll love the seamless transition from vibrant acidity to a rich, concentrated profile of walnuts, honey, and burnt orange peel. It is a wine of incredible depth and persistence, offering a luxurious experience that only three decades of evaporation and concentration can achieve.
Region & Winemaking
Produced in the Douro DOC of northern Portugal. The grapes—primarily Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz—are hand-picked from ancient vines rooted in poor, rocky schist soils. After fortification with grape spirit to halt fermentation, the wine is transferred to "pipas" (traditional 550-litre oak casks). Here, it undergoes slow oxidation for an average of thirty years in Kopke’s historic cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. The final blend is a precision task, selecting casks that offer the perfect harmony between maturity and the freshness required to keep the wine alive.
Tasting Notes
A deep amber-tawny colour with distinct greenish glints at the rim, a hallmark of its age. The nose is incredibly intense and layered, revealing aromas of dried figs, toasted almonds, toffee, and a hint of cigar box. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, boasting a concentrated explosion of butterscotch, spice, and candied peel. The balance between the residual sweetness and the refreshing acidity is impeccable, leading into a finish that lingers for minutes.
Food Pairing
This Port is a sublime companion to rich desserts such as crème brûlée, almond tart, or dark chocolate with sea salt. It also pairs magnificently with aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. For a truly indulgent experience, serve it slightly chilled at 12-14°C as a digestive on its own.
