Pecorino typically shows flavours of lemon, pear, peach and green apple with herbal notes such as sage and thyme. Its bright acidity and mineral edge reflect the mountainous coastal landscapes of Abruzzo and Marche, giving it a fresh yet structured style similar to Verdicchio and Vermentino.
Pecorino is primarily grown in central Italy, especially in Abruzzo and Marche, with key appellations including Terre di Chieti, Offida and Falerio. Smaller plantings can also be found in Umbria and Lazio. Its revival has made it one of Italy’s most exciting modern white wine grapes.
Pecorino pairs beautifully with seafood, shellfish, grilled vegetables, salads and light pasta dishes. Its acidity and herbal notes complement Mediterranean cuisine from Italy, Greece and Spain, and it works well with vegetarian dishes such as courgette, fennel and fresh cheeses.
Despite sharing a name, Pecorino wine and Pecorino cheese are not directly related. The grape’s name is believed to come from local sheep, or pecora, that grazed near the vineyards. Pecorino wine pairs well with many Italian cheeses including Pecorino Romano, Pecorino Sardo and fresh ricotta.
Pecorino is mainly produced as a dry white wine, ranging from crisp and mineral to richer barrel aged styles. Regions such as Offida and Abruzzo offer expressive versions with depth and ageing potential, making Pecorino a standout among modern Italian white wine styles.
