Montepulciano is primarily grown in central Italy especially in Abruzzo where Montepulciano dAbruzzo is the most famous expression. It is also cultivated in Marche Molise and parts of Puglia but Abruzzo remains the heart of production.
Montepulciano typically shows black cherry plum blackberry spice and earthy notes with soft tannins and medium acidity. Wines from Abruzzo are smooth and fruit forward while those from the hills of Marche can be slightly firmer.
No Montepulciano is a grape variety while Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a wine made mainly from Sangiovese in Tuscany. The name refers to the town not the grape which often causes confusion among wine drinkers.
Montepulciano pairs well with Italian dishes such as pizza tomato based pasta grilled meats sausages and rustic Abruzzo cuisine. Its ripe fruit and soft tannins also complement Mediterranean stews and roasted vegetables.
The finest examples come from Montepulciano dAbruzzo DOC and the higher quality Montepulciano dAbruzzo Colline Teramane DOCG. Excellent versions also come from Marche and Molise where hillside vineyards add freshness and structure.
