Godello originates in Galicia, Spain, and is most famously grown in Valdeorras and Bierzo. It also appears in Ribeiro and Monterrei, where cooler Atlantic influenced climates help the grape retain freshness and minerality.
Godello typically shows apple, pear, peach, citrus, fennel, and mineral notes with medium body and bright acidity. Wines from Valdeorras often have a more structured, Burgundian style, while Bierzo can be rounder and fruitier.
Godello is sometimes compared to Chardonnay due to its texture and ability to age, but it retains a distinctly Galician freshness. Its combination of minerality and richness makes it unique among Spanish white grapes.
Godello pairs well with seafood, shellfish, grilled fish, chicken, creamy pasta, and Galician dishes such as pulpo a la gallega. Its acidity and texture make it ideal for Mediterranean and coastal cuisine.
The finest Godello comes from Valdeorras, Spain, especially from hillside vineyards around O Barco and A Rúa. Excellent examples also come from Bierzo, Ribeiro, and Monterrei, with small but growing plantings in Portugal.
