Garganega originates in Veneto, Italy, and is the primary grape used in Soave and Gambellara. It thrives in the volcanic hills around Verona, where it produces some of the region’s most elegant and age worthy white wines.
Garganega typically shows lemon, peach, pear, almond, and floral notes with bright acidity and gentle minerality. Wines from Soave Classico, especially those grown on volcanic soils, often have greater depth and structure.
Yes, Garganega is the main grape in Soave, Soave Classico, and Soave Superiore. It may be blended with small amounts of Trebbiano di Soave or Chardonnay, but high quality Soave is usually dominated by Garganega.
Garganega pairs well with seafood, grilled fish, risotto, salads, light pasta dishes, and Mediterranean cuisine. Its freshness and almond notes make it ideal for Venetian dishes such as seafood risotto and grilled prawns.
The finest Garganega comes from Soave Classico in Veneto, Italy, particularly from hillside vineyards around Monteforte d’Alpone and Soave. Excellent examples also come from Gambellara and select producers in other parts of northern Italy.
