Frappato typically shows flavours of red cherry, strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate with notes of violets, herbs and gentle spice. It is light bodied with soft tannins and fresh acidity, giving it a vibrant and aromatic profile. Many styles are juicy, delicate and easy to drink.
Frappato is primarily grown in Sicily, especially in the Vittoria area in the island’s south east. It thrives in warm Mediterranean conditions and sandy soils. Sicily remains the heartland of Frappato production, although small experimental plantings exist elsewhere in Italy.
Frappato can resemble Pinot Noir in its light body, bright red fruit and floral character. However, it often has a more Mediterranean profile with herbal notes and slightly higher acidity. Both grapes produce elegant, aromatic reds that can be enjoyed lightly chilled.
Frappato pairs well with pasta, pizza, grilled vegetables, seafood dishes, charcuterie and Mediterranean cuisine. Its freshness and soft tannins complement dishes featuring tomatoes, herbs and olive oil. It also works beautifully with lighter plates and vegetarian dishes.
Frappato is used to produce fresh single varietal reds, blends in Cerasuolo di Vittoria with Nero d’Avola and lighter chillable styles. Most expressions focus on fragrance and purity, although some producers craft more structured versions with extra depth.
