Avesso typically shows flavours of peach, apricot, lemon and subtle tropical fruit with floral notes and a soft mineral edge. It has more body than many Vinho Verde grapes, offering a rounded texture balanced by fresh acidity. Its style sits between crisp and aromatic, making it highly versatile.
Avesso is primarily grown in Portugal, especially in the Vinho Verde region in subzones such as Baião and Amarante. It thrives in warmer inland areas where it develops ripeness while maintaining acidity. Small plantings can also be found in other northern Portuguese regions.
Avesso and Alvarinho share freshness and aromatic character, but Avesso tends to be slightly fuller bodied with softer acidity. Alvarinho is more intensely aromatic, while Avesso offers a gentler, rounded profile. Both grapes contribute to the diversity of modern Portuguese white wines.
Avesso pairs well with seafood, grilled fish, salads, poultry, light pasta dishes and Mediterranean cuisine. Its balance of fruit and freshness works beautifully with dishes from Portugal, Spain and Italy, and it complements vegetarian plates featuring courgette, herbs and soft cheeses.
Avesso is used to produce fresh young whites, fuller bodied Vinho Verde styles and blends with grapes such as Loureiro and Arinto. Its natural structure also makes it suitable for more textured or lightly oaked expressions, showcasing its growing importance in Portuguese white wine production.
