A Landscape Shaped by Old Vines
Luis Cañas works with an extraordinary mosaic of vineyards which have 870 individual plots of which many are planted with old bush vines rooted in chalky‑clay soils beneath the Sierra de Cantabria. These high‑altitude sites produce small, concentrated berries that give the wines depth, freshness and complexity. The estate’s commitment to vineyard selection is so rigorous that even grapes destined for its Crianza pass through sorting tables, ensuring quality from the very beginning.
Generations of Craft and Care
Although the Cañas family had long produced wine, the modern era began in the 1970s, when they started bottling their own cosechero wines. A major shift came in the late 1980s with the arrival of Juan Luis Cañas, who elevated the estate’s focus on quality and ageing. Today, the winery is recognised for its balance of tradition and innovation, producing wines that reflect both the heritage of Rioja Alavesa and the precision of contemporary winemaking.
How Luis Cañas Shapes Its Wines
Meerlust focuses on classical varieties and traditional methods, favouring hand‑harvesting, gentle extraction and careful oak maturation. The goal is always balance—wines with depth and concentration, but also freshness, structure and the ability to evolve beautifully in bottle. This approach has earned Meerlust a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate wines with poise, character and a strong sense of place.
Bodegas Luis Cañas Wines
Luis Cañas Crianza is one of Rioja’s most admired value wines, crafted mainly from Tempranillo with small amounts of traditional varieties. It offers bright red fruit, balsamic notes, cedar and gentle spice, supported by smooth tannins and a velvety palate. Aged for around 12 months in French and American oak, it delivers exceptional balance and drinkability while showcasing the purity of Rioja Alavesa fruit.
Luis Cañas Viñas Viejas Blanco
Viñas Viejas Blanco is a beautifully textured white wine made from old‑vine white varieties such as Viura and Malvasía. It combines citrus and orchard fruit with subtle floral notes, creamy lees texture and refined oak influence. The result is a complex, gastronomic white that highlights the potential of mature vineyards in Rioja Alavesa.
The Rioja Reserva is elegant, structured and classically styled, offering layers of ripe red fruit, tobacco, vanilla and warm spice. Extended ageing in oak and bottle brings harmony and depth, while the estate’s high‑altitude vineyards contribute freshness and lift. This is a refined, age‑worthy expression of traditional Rioja craftsmanship.
Luis Cañas Reserva Selección de la Familia
Selección de la Familia is the estate’s most prestigious Reserva, crafted from the finest old‑vine parcels and made only in exceptional vintages. It is powerful yet polished, with concentrated black fruit, balsamic notes, cedar, cocoa and a long, elegant finish. The wine’s structure and complexity make it one of Rioja Alavesa’s standout Reservas, prized by collectors for its ageing potential.
