Meet the producer
“I cannot remember being more impressed with an initial release of wines than those,” said James Halliday about Keith Tulloch. The winery has a long legacy in Pokolbin, producing wines with precision, balance, and cellar-worthy structure. Keith Tulloch combines modern winemaking with a respect for history, creating wines that are both approachable and capable of long-term ageing.

Production
The history of Tulloch in Pokolbin began in the late 1880s when JY Tulloch, Keith’s great-grandfather, married Florence Kester. Keith is the second Keith Tulloch winemaker, following his great-uncle Keith Kester Tulloch. Inspired by his time in the Rhône Valley, particularly Hermitage vineyards of Jaboulet, Keith has adapted Rhône techniques to Hunter Shiraz. Grapes from old, dry-farmed vineyards are fermented with a trace of Viognier in open vats for four weeks, with hand plunging to extract structure and complexity. The wine is matured for 20 months in fine French oak barriques, imparting velvety oak support and enhancing the Shiraz’s depth and length.

Tasting notes
Heady aromas of jaffa and orange blossom overlay deeper blackcurrant, cola, anise, and blackberry notes. Juniper and crushed herb hints emerge as the wine breathes. The palate is dominated by muscular black-fruit flavours, with inky blackcurrant, black cherry, liquorice sweetness, dark chocolate, and subtle black-olive savouriness. Layers of fine oak provide spice, subtle roast-coffee extract, and an exotic, luxurious finish. Balanced, structured, and complex, this Shiraz offers a long, taut, and memorable tasting experience.

Food match
Pairs beautifully with strong-flavoured meats such as duck, game, or slow-roasted dishes. Also excellent with Osso-bucco or bold Asian-fusion cuisine.
