The Story of Camel Valley: From RAF Dreams to Award-Winning English Wines
In 1989, former RAF pilot Bob Lindo and his wife Annie planted their first 8,000 vines on the sun-soaked slopes of the Camel Valley in the heart of Cornwall. What began as a bold new chapter in their post-service life soon blossomed into one of the UK’s most celebrated English wine success stories.
After purchasing their farm to raise a young family, Bob and Annie initially raised sheep and cattle. But each summer, as they watched the grass dry on the vineyard's sun-drenched slopes, they wondered if grapevines might thrive there instead. Driven by curiosity and ambition, Bob traveled to Germany to “do a vintage,” gaining firsthand winemaking experience. Together, they took viticulture courses, devoured every book they could find, and built a state-of-the-art winery equipped with the best tools they could afford.
The early years were challenging—every task was done by hand, and harvests meant long nights of hard work. Annie recalls:“We practically lived in the vineyard. It was just us and a few friends picking grapes, and Bob would stay up all night crushing them. But we loved it.” Their dedication paid off when Camel Valley's first vintage won a medal in the national English Wine competition, validating their pursuit of excellence.
Since then, Camel Valley has consistently earned accolades at both national and international wine competitions. Notable achievements include:
2002 Waitrose Drinks Producer of the Year
2003 South West Business Challenge Award for Wealth Creation in Rural Communities
2005 International Wine Challenge Gold Medal – the only gold awarded to a non-Champenoise sparkling wine, placing Camel Valley among the world’s finest
Bob continued as head winemaker, supported by a growing team and a new winery. He also pioneered Cornwall’s first Traditional Method sparkling wine, setting a new standard for English sparkling wine.“Winning that Gold Medal was the proudest moment of my life. Competing with the world’s best and coming out on top proved that English wine could truly shine.”Today, Camel Valley Winery remains a family-run operation, known for producing exceptional sparkling and still wines that reflect the passion, precision, and pioneering spirit of its founders.
