Tannat originates in Madiran, France, where it produces deeply structured and tannic red wines. It has become especially famous in Uruguay, particularly in Canelones and Maldonado, where the grape develops softer tannins and vibrant fruit.
Tannat typically shows blackberry, plum, black cherry, cocoa, spice, and firm tannins with high structure. French Tannat from Madiran is powerful and earthy, while Uruguayan Tannat is often smoother with fresher acidity.
Uruguay adopted Tannat in the 19th century, and its coastal climate helps soften the grape’s naturally high tannins. Regions such as Canelones, Maldonado, and San Jose now produce some of the world’s most approachable and expressive Tannat wines.
Tannat pairs well with grilled meats, steak, lamb, barbecue, stews, and rich dishes. Its bold tannins and dark fruit make it ideal for hearty cuisine, especially traditional dishes from France and Uruguay.
The finest Tannat comes from Madiran, France, and from Uruguay’s top regions including Canelones and Maldonado. High quality examples also come from Argentina, Brazil, and select vineyards in California.
