Marlborough is known for producing world class Sauvignon Blanc with bright acidity, tropical fruit, citrus and distinctive herbaceous notes. The region also makes elegant Pinot Noir, refined Chardonnay and high quality sparkling wines. Its fresh expressive style has made Marlborough one of the most recognisable wine regions globally.
Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant grape in Marlborough, followed by Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Smaller plantings include Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. These varieties thrive in New Zealand’s cool climate and help define the region’s aromatic, fruit driven style.
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc typically shows flavours of passion fruit, lime, gooseberry and fresh herbs with crisp acidity and a clean finish. Pinot Noir offers red cherry, raspberry and subtle spice, while Chardonnay ranges from citrus driven to lightly creamy depending on winemaking choices.
Marlborough includes the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley and the Southern Valleys. The Wairau Valley is known for ripe tropical fruit, the Awatere Valley produces more mineral and herbaceous styles and the Southern Valleys offer structure and depth, especially for Pinot Noir.
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with seafood, salads, goat cheese, sushi and light Asian dishes. Its acidity and freshness complement vibrant flavours. Pinot Noir suits duck, pork, mushrooms and roasted vegetables, while Chardonnay pairs well with poultry, seafood and creamy sauces.
Marlborough’s terroir is shaped by long sunshine hours, cool nights and a mix of gravel, clay and alluvial soils. The warm days help ripen grapes fully, while the cool nights preserve acidity and aromatics. Coastal breezes add freshness, and the varied valleys create distinct expressions of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. This combination gives Marlborough wines their intensity, purity and vibrant character.
