Encruzado typically shows flavours of lemon, peach, melon and subtle tropical fruit with notes of white flowers, herbs and soft minerality. It has fresh acidity and a refined texture. With age, Encruzado can develop complexity with hints of nuts, honey and waxy richness.
Encruzado is primarily grown in the Dão region of Portugal, where it is considered one of the finest local white grapes. It thrives in the region’s granite soils and cooler climate, producing wines with balance, freshness and ageing potential. Plantings outside Dão are limited.
Encruzado can show similarities to Chardonnay in its ability to balance freshness with texture and to respond well to oak. However, it often has a more herbal and mineral profile. Both grapes can produce elegant, age worthy wines, but Encruzado retains a distinctly Portuguese character.
Encruzado pairs well with seafood, poultry, creamy dishes, risotto, grilled vegetables and Mediterranean cuisine. Its acidity and texture complement dishes featuring herbs, lemon and olive oil. Aged Encruzado works beautifully with richer plates and soft cheeses.
Encruzado is used to produce fresh unoaked whites, textured barrel aged styles and complex age worthy wines. It is also an important component in Dão blends. Many producers highlight its versatility, crafting wines that range from crisp and mineral to rich and layered.
