Dornfelder was created in Germany in 1955 by crossing Helfensteiner and Heroldrebe. It is now widely grown in Pfalz, Rheinhessen, and Baden, where it produces deeply coloured, fruit forward red wines.
Dornfelder typically shows blackberry, cherry, plum, violet, and gentle spice with soft tannins and lively acidity. Styles range from fresh and fruity to richer, oak influenced versions with more structure.
Dornfelder can be dry, off dry, or semi sweet depending on the producer and region. Pfalz and Rheinhessen often favour dry styles, while some German regions also produce fruitier, lightly sweet versions.
Dornfelder pairs well with roast pork, sausages, grilled chicken, pizza, pasta, and German dishes such as schnitzel and bratwurst. Its soft tannins and juicy fruit make it versatile for casual meals.
The finest Dornfelder comes from Pfalz and Rheinhessen in Germany, where warmer climates help ripen the grape fully. High quality examples also come from Baden and from small plantings in England and the USA.
