Brachetto typically shows flavours of fresh strawberry, raspberry, rose petals and red cherry with a light sweetness and soft bubbles. It is aromatic, floral and refreshing with low alcohol, making it ideal for those who enjoy delicately sweet sparkling wines. Its charm lies in its perfume and gentle fruitiness.
Brachetto is primarily grown in Piedmont in north west Italy, especially around Asti and Acqui Terme. The most famous expression is Brachetto d’Acqui, a lightly sparkling sweet red wine. Small plantings exist elsewhere in Italy, but Piedmont remains the heart of Brachetto production.
Brachetto and Moscato share sweetness, low alcohol and aromatic character, but Brachetto offers red fruit and rose notes, while Moscato is more citrus and floral. Both produce lightly sparkling wines in Piedmont, and both are popular choices for desserts and celebrations.
Brachetto pairs well with fruit desserts, chocolate, pastries, panna cotta and fresh berries. Its sweetness and gentle bubbles complement Italian desserts and lighter dishes. It also works beautifully as an aperitif or with afternoon treats such as biscuits and cakes.
Brachetto is used to produce lightly sparkling wines, fully sparkling wines and sweet still reds. Brachetto d’Acqui is the most famous style, offering fragrant sweetness and low alcohol. Still versions are rarer but showcase the grape’s aromatic red fruit character.
