Spice Route Swartland Pinotage is an expressive single-vineyard red from Malmesbury in South Africa’s Coastal Region, made from 100% organically farmed Pinotage bush vines planted in 1997 on Koffieklip soils of decomposed granite enriched with iron-rich stones. The grapes are fermented in 5-tonne open concrete fermenters with manual punch-downs, then pressed and matured in tight-grain American oak barrels (30% new) and a small portion in underground clay pots, producing a wine that captures the purity, structure, and intensity of the fruit.

Meet the producer

Founded in 1998 by Charles Back, Spice Route was a pioneer in Swartland viticulture, establishing high-quality, dry-farmed vineyards and producing terroir-driven wines that reflect the region’s unique soils and climate. Winemaker Charl du Plessis brings 15 years of experience to the estate, using a hands-off approach to showcase the vineyard’s character.

Production

Grapes are harvested from a single bush-vine block, fermented in open concrete fermenters with manual punch-downs twice daily, pressed, and aged in American oak barrels and underground clay pots, allowing malolactic fermentation to occur naturally and integrating complex structure and texture.

Tasting notes

Intense ruby red, with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, dark spices, cedar, and subtle smoky oak. The palate is rich with dark fruit flavours, bright acidity, and velvety tannins, finishing long and structured.
