Description
Description
Rodrigo Méndez Sálvora Albariño is a profound, old-vine white wine from the Val do Salnés subzone of Rías Baixas in Galicia, Spain. Crafted by Rodrigo Méndez, one of Spain’s most respected and visionary winemakers, this cuvée revives the historic, low-intervention techniques of the region. Sourced from a century-old single vineyard in his home village of Meaño, it offers a deeply mineral, complex, and age-worthy expression that showcases Albariño in an entirely new light.
Why You'll Love It
This is a world-class Albariño far removed from mass-produced, simple stainless-steel examples. Grown on centenarian vines planted in 1905, Sálvora embraces traditional winemaking methods to deliver exceptional depth, texture, and electric salinity. Fermented with wild yeasts in old oak vessels, it seamlessly marries vibrant Atlantic freshness with a rich, layered palate, providing fine wine enthusiasts with a authentic, artisanal gem from coastal Spain.
Vineyard & Production
The grapes are hand-harvested from a pre-phylloxera single vineyard planted on granite and sandy soils in the cool, coastal Val do Salnés region. In homage to traditional Galician winemaking prior to the 1980s, the fruit undergoes fermentation using 100% indigenous yeasts in large, used 600-litre French oak barrels without temperature control or malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged on its fine lees in wood for 12 months, allowing it to gain remarkable structure, creamy texture, and complex lees influence while retaining its natural core of high acidity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it presents a brilliant straw-yellow colour. The nose is highly complex and fragrant, revealing aromas of ripe pear, Meyer lemon zest, white flowers, and ginger, layered with subtle notes of smoky lees and sea spray. On the palate, it is focused, concentrated, and beautifully textured, showcasing vibrant stone fruit and citrus flavours underpinned by an electric, mouth-watering line of salinity. The finish is remarkably long, dry, and mineral-driven, leaving a crisp and lingering impression of coastal freshness.
Perfect Pairings
With its striking mineral cut and coastal character, this serious Albariño is an exceptional partner for top-tier seafood and Atlantic delicacies. It pairs magnificently with razor clams, grilled octopus, seared scallops, oysters, and whole roasted sea bass. It also complements aromatic Asian dishes, such as Thai seafood curries, sushi, and Vietnamese summer rolls, as well as aged goat's cheese.
