Raats Family Wines, Dolomite Cabernet Franc is a vibrant and elegant Cabernet Franc from the granitic Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch, expressing purity of fruit, subtle minerality, and a velvet-soft finish. Aromas of dark and red cherry, herbs, and spice lead to a layered palate with hints of wet-stone minerality and fine, integrated tannins.

About the Producer

Founded in 2000 by Bruwer Raats, Raats Family Wines focuses on excellence through specialisation, particularly with Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. Bruwer identified the unique potential of the decomposed dolomite granite soils in Polkadraai Hills, now considered one of Stellenbosch’s finest terroirs. The estate’s single-vineyard wines, including Eden High Density Chenin Blanc, Dolomite Cabernet Franc, and the MR de Compostella, are regarded as some of the best expressions of these varieties globally.

Vineyard

The Dolomite Cabernet Franc comes exclusively from vineyards planted on decomposed dolomite granite soils, which impart freshness, vibrant acidity, and a distinct mineral character. Grapes were hand-harvested in February at optimal ripeness.

Winemaking

The fruit was triple hand-sorted, crushed, and cold-soaked on skins for five days before fermentation at 28°C. Basket pressing followed, with malolactic fermentation completed in stainless steel tanks. The wine was aged for 14 months in French 300-litre barrels, with no new oak, maintaining purity and elegance.

Tasting Notes

Dark and red cherry aromas, layered with spiciness and herbaceous notes. The palate shows dark berries, graphite, and a hint of wet-stone minerality, leading to a soft, velvet finish. Floral and approachable, yet balanced and complex.

Perfect with game birds in red wine sauce, beef fillet, or pork loin.
