Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof Rum is presented as a bold, traditional naval‑strength spirit that pays homage to the historic rum once issued aboard Royal Navy ships. Bottled at a higher proof in keeping with the old “gunpowder test”, it delivers the depth, weight and authenticity that enthusiasts expect from a true Admiralty‑style blend. Distilled in wooden pot stills and crafted to original naval specifications, it offers a robust character that stands apart from modern, lighter rums, making it a favourite for classic cocktails or for sipping with a sense of maritime heritage.

Its aroma opens with dark molasses, treacle and rich brown sugar, followed by hints of leather, spice and toasted oak. On the palate it is full‑bodied and intense, carrying flavours of demerara sugar, burnt caramel, nutmeg and clove, balanced by a subtle smokiness from the traditional distillation. The higher strength adds warmth and vigour without overwhelming the complexity. The finish is long, powerful and slightly dry, leaving lingering notes of spice, dark fruit and charred wood. It offers a commanding, old‑world rum experience that reflects its naval roots with unmistakable authenticity.

So why is it called gunpowder strength? It's because that 54.5% ABV is the strength that gunpowder will still ignite if soaked in the liquid. This was important for two reasons, the first being that if the gunpowder used for the cannons and muskets was accidentally soaked, they would still fire when the ship came under attack. The second (and many sailors would say the most important!) reason was that before the invention of the hydrometer, gunpowder was used to check if the rum had been watered down by the quartermaster. A small amount was placed in the rum and then ignited to see if it was at strength. If it wasn't, the quartermaster was in serious trouble and may have been thrown overboard!
