Susumaniello is one of Puglia's great undiscovered varieties, prized locally for centuries but rarely seen outside the region. Paolo Leo has been championing indigenous Apulian grapes for five generations, and Pianerosse is a perfect showcase of what Susumaniello can do: vibrant red fruit, pronounced spice, smooth tannins, and a lingering finish that makes it endlessly food-friendly. At this price, it is one of the most interesting and original bottles you will find from southern Italy.

Vineyard & Production

The grapes are sourced from vineyards around Brindisi in Puglia, where the warm Apulian climate and the influence of the Adriatic produce fruit of natural richness and intensity. Grapes are harvested by hand into boxes, then destemmed before fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of 27°C for 8-10 days with daily pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation follows immediately, and the wine is then aged for six months in stainless steel to preserve freshness and varietal character.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in colour with violet tinges. The nose is pronounced with aromas of spice, black pepper, cloves, and red fruits including cherry and raspberry. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with elegant, smooth tannins, good acidity, and a lingering finish of spice and red fruit.

Perfect Pairings

A natural partner for Apulian classics such as orecchiette with tomato sauce or turnip tops. Also excellent alongside stewed meats, slow-cooked ragu, roast meat, and game. Its rusticity and spice make it a superb match for hearty Mediterranean dishes.
