At 420 metres above sea level, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean from its perch high above the Elgin Valley, Andrew Gunn founded Iona in what is recognised as one of the coolest vineyard sites in the Cape. In South Africa, where true cool-climate vineyards are rare, these sites are prized. The long growing season – often extending two months later than Stellenbosch – allows grapes to ripen slowly, producing wines of elegance, freshness, and layered complexity. Farming is carried out with minimal intervention, guided by organic and biodynamic principles that prioritise soil health. Natural vineyard balance is maintained by a resident flock of geese, which provides effective pest control.

Winemaking

Grapes are hand harvested, de-stemmed but not crushed, with 10% whole-bunch fermentation adding complexity. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at 28°C, with regular punch downs to extract colour and fine tannins. After pressing, the wine is matured for 11 months in seasoned French oak barrels (2nd, 3rd, and 4th fill), ensuring subtle integration of oak without overpowering Pinot’s delicacy.

Tasting Note

Mr P Pinot Noir is bright, elegant, and vibrant. Aromas of fresh cherry and wild red berries mingle with notes of forest floor and spice. On the palate, pure sweet cherry fruit takes centre stage, framed by a supple texture and lively acidity. The finish is fresh, intense, and lifted, with a refined, juicy vibrancy that makes it immediately appealing.

Viticulture

The grapes come from Langrug, one of Iona’s small farms in the Elgin Valley. Here, diverse soils and cooling ocean breezes create ideal conditions for slow ripening, enabling Pinot Noir to achieve flavour concentration, finesse, and balance. Mr P is crafted as a “Pinot for the people” – expressive of classic cool-climate Pinot Noir, but approachable and accessible, made from younger vines and matured in older barrels.
