Mooiplaas Wine Estate Tabakland Cabernet Sauvignon is a distinguished, beautifully structured, and deeply expressive red wine produced in the historic Bottelary Hills ward of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Mooiplaas is celebrated as a family-owned estate dedicated to conservation, biodiversity, and terroir-driven viticulture. Sourced from elevated, rolling hillside vineyards exposed to cooling ocean breezes from False Bay, this exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon captures the rugged elegance and classic dark fruit profile of its coastal mountain origin.

Why You'll Love It

This wine stands out for its impressive concentration, refined structural poise, and distinct sense of place. Grown in ancient weathered granite and decomposed shale soils, the vines produce tiny, thick-skinned berries that yield immense depth and colour. Matured patiently in French oak barriques, it delivers a sophisticated bouquet of ripe blackcurrants, dark plums, cedar wood, and pencil shavings, supported by fine-grained tannins that provide both immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential.

Vineyard & Production

The grapes are hand-harvested from mature vineyard blocks situated on the south-to-west-facing slopes of the Bottelary Hills during the cool morning hours. Upon arrival at the cellar, the fruit is destemmed and gently crushed into temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Fermentation takes place with regular pump-overs to extract rich colour and complex structural tannins. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels (a combination of new and seasoned wood) for an eighteen-month maturation period before careful blending and bottling.

Tasting Notes

In the glass, it displays a deep, opaque ruby-red colour with a dark purple rim. The nose is complex, layered, and inviting, opening with classic aromas of ripe cassis, black cherries, and dark plums, interwoven with sophisticated notes of tobacco leaf, dried herbs, cedar wood, and subtle baking spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied, structured, and harmonious, offering concentrated dark berry flavours underpinned by a vibrant beam of freshness and exceptionally fine, chalky tannins that carry into a long, savoury, and persistent finish.

Perfect Pairings

With its commanding structure, refined tannins, and classic dark fruit profile, this Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon is a magnificent centrepiece for fine dining. It pairs magnificently with prime roasted beef fillet, slow-braised beef short ribs, rack of lamb with rosemary, and roasted venison loin. It is also an extraordinary partner for wild mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Cheddar, or Parmigiano-Reggiano.
