Majella is one of Coonawarra’s most acclaimed wineries, regarded as a benchmark producer of Cabernet Sauvignon and home to one of Australia’s most iconic sparkling reds. Despite its stellar reputation and a string of awards, owner Brian ‘Prof’ Lynn remains modest, describing himself as the humble custodian of vineyards planted on the world-famous terra rossa soils. Sustainability lies at the core of every stage of production, while winemaker Bruce Gregory’s skill and precision have cemented Majella’s reputation for quality. From their cult-status Sparkling Shiraz to their Langton’s-classified Cabernet, Majella continues to define Coonawarra excellence.

Winemaking

Primary fermentation takes place in 10-tonne stainless steel static fermenters, pumped over twice daily, before finishing in hogsheads. Secondary fermentation occurs in bottle, where the wine rests on its lees for almost 12 months. It is then disgorged and given a small dosage of liqueur (sweetener), including a touch of vintage port in true Australian style.

Tasting Note

One of Australia’s finest sparkling reds, this wine is full-flavoured yet balanced. Bright fruit is layered with vanilla oak, cinnamon, and pepper spice, alongside savoury notes of yeasty brioche. The palate is framed by a gentle acid line and a soft, harmonious finish.

Viticulture

Coonawarra lies just 60 miles inland, shaped by a maritime climate that brings dry, moderately cool summers and persistent cloud cover, which moderates ripening temperatures. The region’s famed terra rossa soil is considered Australia’s greatest for Cabernet Sauvignon and plays a crucial role in producing Majella’s high-quality fruit.
