Champagne Louis Roederer, founded in 1776 and currently managed by Frédéric Rouzaud, represents over two centuries of meticulous winemaking. The estate comprises over 240 hectares of vineyards exclusively in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages, allowing self-sufficiency for 70% of non-vintage production and 100% of vintage champagnes. A pioneer in sustainable viticulture, Louis Roederer employs organic and regenerative practices across its vineyards, working in harmony with nature while prioritising terroir expression and quality.
Vineyards
The Pinot Noir grapes are sourced from the historic Grand Cru of Verzy, while the Chardonnay is drawn from the Grand Cru of Chouilly. These vineyard sites provide optimal conditions for the development of fruit intensity, freshness, and structural elegance.
Winemaking
The 2016 Vintage is a blend of 68% Pinot Noir and 32% Chardonnay. Approximately 33% of the wine underwent fermentation in oak, with 5% malolactic fermentation. A dosage of 7g/l was applied to balance freshness and richness. Harvest took place from 15 September to 1 October, with careful handling to preserve the integrity and vibrancy of the fruit.
Vintage Information
The 2016 vintage experienced marked weather variations: a cool, wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer with a late August heatwave. These conditions favoured the Pinot Noir, producing wines with intense fruit character and silky texture, while the Chardonnay achieved a chiselled, saline profile. The vintage highlights the singular expression of Verzy Pinot Noir, offering a vibrant, refined tribute to the Grand Cru vineyards.
Tasting Note
The bouquet opens with gently toasted, powdery aromas, blending ripe red fruits such as Burlat cherry and redcurrant, candied citrus, and roasted hazelnuts. Subtle mineral notes of sun-warmed chalk and calcareous millstone emerge with aeration. On the palate, the wine is complex and generous, beginning with a juicy, creamy body layered with nectarine-like fruit. Silky, delicate bubbles enhance the texture, while mineral, spicy, and lightly oaky notes provide structure. The finish is long, saline, and precise, with a refined sapidity and elegant persistence.
