Description

Te Kairanga Runholder Pinot Noir is a refined, deeply expressive red wine hailing from the world-famous Martinborough Terrace in Wairarapa, New Zealand. Crafted by chief winemaker John Kavanagh at Te Kairanga, one of the region's pioneering estates, this bottling pays homage to John Martin, the founding father of Martinborough who originally farmed the land as a sheep runholder. Sourced from prized, low-yielding vineyard parcels, it encapsulates the signature balance of pure red fruit and distinctive savoury depth that defines top-tier Martinborough Pinot Noir.

Why You'll Love It

This is a magnificent, highly acclaimed Pinot Noir that offers a brilliant benchmark for cool-climate New Zealand winemaking. Grown on ancient alluvial gravel terraces, it strikes a perfect harmony between vibrant fruit energy and subtle, complex undertones. By utilizing gentle handling, sensitive French oak maturation, and minimal filtration, Te Kairanga delivers a wine that is silky, textured, and deeply satisfying, offering a sophisticated alternative to classic Burgundian red wines.

Vineyard & Production

The grapes are hand-selected from the Home and McLeod Vineyards, situated on the deep, free-draining alluvial gravels of the Martinborough Terrace. The fruit, comprising several distinct Pinot Noir clones including the renowned Abel clone, is picked block by block and fermented in small open-top vats with traditional hand-plunging to extract subtle colour and structural tannins. The wine matures for ten months in French oak barriques (around 25% new), allowing it to gain textural richness and gentle spice while retaining its authentic varietal purity and terroir character.

Tasting Notes

Glinting a deep cherry red in the glass, this elegant wine opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and redcurrants, overlaid with notes of rose petals, dried herbs, and classic Martinborough savoury spice. On the palate, it is supple, medium-bodied, and wonderfully textured, displaying a vibrant core of dark plum, cranberry, and delicate forest floor earthiness. Fine, silky tannins and a refreshing line of acidity provide a long, focused finish marked by a touch of warm baking spice.

Perfect Pairings

With its vibrant acidity, silky structure, and earthy nuances, this versatile Pinot Noir is an outstanding partner for a variety of gourmet dishes. It pairs magnificently with herb-crusted lamb chops, roasted duck breast with a berry reduction, or seared venison medallions. It is also an exceptional match for oily fish like pan-seared salmon or tuna, wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, and rich wild mushroom risottos.
