Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine estate, founded in 1685 by Cape Governor Simon van der Stel in the foothills of Table Mountain. Renowned historically for acclaim from figures such as Napoleon, Bismarck, and King Louis Philippe of France, the estate today is managed by the Groot Constantia Trust. Covering 165 hectares, 87 hectares are planted with vineyards at altitudes ranging from 60 to 280 metres above sea level. The estate follows sustainable viticulture practices and holds the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) certification. The cool maritime-influenced climate ensures balanced, complex wines.

Vintage
The 2022 vintage experienced a cool, wet spring which delayed budding by seven to ten days. Flowering was generally five days later than usual, with a steady fruit set and gradual ripening through a cooler season. These conditions allowed the grapes to develop excellent colour, expressive flavours, and balanced natural acidity, resulting in a harmonious and elegant Pinotage.

Vineyard
Grapes are sourced from steep valley slopes on the eastern side of Table Mountain, between 39 and 160 metres above sea level, with predominantly south to south-east facing aspects. The Mediterranean climate benefits from cooling Atlantic Ocean breezes, producing grapes with both concentration and finesse. Soils are primarily Cartref and Glenrosa – gravelly and low in fertility – providing excellent drainage and promoting complexity in the fruit.

Winemaking
Grapes were harvested at 26° Balling and fermented on their skins to extract colour, flavour, and fine tannins, with four pumpovers per day to optimise extraction. The wine then matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, comprising 40% new, 20% second fill, 20% third fill, and 20% fourth fill barrels, to add depth and subtle complexity.

Tasting Notes
Aromas of black cherry, plum, dark chocolate, and hints of herbs and smoky bacon lead to a warm, spicy finish. The palate is rich and intense, with ripe strawberry, raspberry, and black cherry flavours complemented by fine French oak nuances of cacao. The fine tannins provide structure and ensure a long, elegant finish.
