African chocolate carries a complex and often troubled legacy. It is for this reason that initiatives such as those in Virunga National Park—Africa’s oldest—hold such profound significance. In 2016, the Femmes de Virunga project was established, marking the world’s first female-led cacao cooperative, founded in one of the most perilous regions for women. This pioneering endeavour offers education and support to its members, empowering them to sustain their families and communities.

Since its inception, the project has seen the planting of over 250,000 cacao trees and now comprises more than 1,500 women farmers. The result is a chocolate of exceptional depth and character—rich, bold, and ethically produced. Its nuanced flavour profile, shaped by volcanic soil and high-altitude terroir, makes it particularly well suited to pairing with fine whisky, where its earthy notes and subtle bitterness complement the spirit’s warmth and complexity.
