Hochar Père et Fils Red 2020 is a blend of Cinsault, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from a single vineyard in the Western Bekaa Valley, near the village of Aana. The vineyard sits 1,000m above sea level on deep, gravelly soils over a limestone base. Vines average 30 years in age and low yields of 20–30 hectolitres per hectare produce a concentrated, full-flavoured wine.

Harvest

Benefiting from rainy and snowy conditions between December and April, the vines had an ideal flowering season in late May and early June. Summer temperatures were favourable, though a heatwave from 1–14 September brought extreme temperatures of 38–40°C. Harvesting was guided more by soil types and sugar content than varietal order. The winery worked intensively to complete fermentation and rack wines to make space for subsequent grapes, with the red harvest concluding on the last day of September.

Winemaking

The grapes were fermented at 27–29°C with 15–20 days maceration in cement vats, followed by six months ageing in French Nevers oak barrels. The wine was blended in autumn 2021 and bottled in spring 2022.

Tasting Notes

Deep burgundy with transparent layers revealing the Grenache component. Aromas of ripe red cherry, plums, dates, mulberries, and tea leaves. The palate is Mediterranean in style, with sweet tannins and a subtle spiciness. The wine develops even greater refinement a day after opening. The 2020 red wines are notable for concentration and depth, and Hochar Red 2020 is a prime example.

Pairs well with roasted lamb, grilled meats, Mediterranean dishes, and aged cheeses.
