Perelada is one of Catalunya’s most prestigious and highly regarded wine and Cava producers, a family-owned estate with a winemaking tradition stretching back to the Middle Ages. The estate’s foundation lies in DO Empordà, which Perelada helped establish in the 1960s through skill and dedication. The vineyards are planted on diverse soils, from slate to sand, fluvial sediment to gravel, running down from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean coast. This exceptional setting inspires a pursuit of quality that extends beyond winemaking to embrace art and culture, reflecting the region’s heritage, including its connection to Salvador Dalí. The family later acquired a bodega in Vilafranca del Penedès, DO Cava, expanding production and establishing Perelada among Spain’s leading Cava producers. The estate is committed to sustainable agriculture across all its vineyards, and the summer Castillo Perelada festival highlights its cultural engagement with music under the stars of Empordà.

Viticulture

The grapes for this wine are sourced from five vineyards situated between 40 and 150 metres above sea level, with an average vine age of 21 years. The vineyards are managed with conventional viticulture using a double royal training system. Soils vary from slate slopes to sandy plains and gravel, providing a diversity of flavours and aromas that contribute to the wine’s complexity and character.

Winemaking

This is a traditional red wine made with extended maceration and controlled fermentation at 24°C. The wine is matured in a combination of fine American oak and Allier French oak, and it undergoes at least two years of bottle ageing before release.

Tasting Note

The wine displays a deep cherry-red colour, with aromas of red fruits and spices, complemented by balsamic hints and a subtle toasted background. On the palate, it is fresh, well-structured and balanced, with plentiful yet harmonious tannins. It is a wine of great personality with a long, elegant finish.
