Description
Description
Casa Marin Sauvignon Gris Estero Vineyard is a rare and exceptional coastal white from San Antonio Valley, Chile, made from Sauvignon Gris, also known in France as Fié, a grape variety beloved by chefs and sommeliers worldwide for its distinctive floral, spicy character. When Casa Marin's first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc was released, Robert Parker hailed it as the 'best white wine made in South America', a testament to the vision of Maria Luz Marín, who fought to plant her vineyards in Lo Abarca, just 5km from the Pacific Ocean. Powerful floral and spicy aromas with a touch of pink grapefruit, a ripe and mouth-filling palate with smoky French oak, and a crisp, clean finish.
Why You'll Love It
This is Sauvignon Gris from Casa Marin, one of Chile's most pioneering coastal estates. Maria Luz Marín's determination to plant vineyards in Lo Abarca, just 4km from the Pacific Ocean, was met with scepticism, but her vision has been vindicated many times over. The Estero Vineyard's vines, around 15 years old, grow on a mixture of loam, clay, and volcanic soils in a cool coastal climate where average temperatures reach just 15°C, summer highs rarely exceed 28°C, and morning fogs and frosts occur in spring and early summer. Grapes are hand-picked during the last week of March or first week of April, timing is critical for Sauvignon Gris, where a single day's difference in harvest can be reflected in the wine. Fermentation begins in stainless steel before the wine is transferred to used 5,500-litre French oak barrels for six months, adding texture and subtle smokiness while preserving the variety's distinctive aromatic character. This is Chilean white wine with rarity, coastal character, and genuine distinction.
