Back in 1988, three families invested in Romania’s Cramele Recaș Estate, starting with 650 ha of underperforming vineyards and a former state-owned winery. Today, Philip Cox and his Romanian wife Elvira have transformed it into one of Romania’s most successful and modern wineries. Recognized globally, Recaș produces a wide range of wines, including natural and orange wines from organic grapes, combining old vines with modern plantings in state-of-the-art facilities.

Viticulture

Grapes are 100% estate-grown from the Uberland Hill vineyard. The vineyards are non-irrigated, grown on soils ranging from cracking clay to limestone-rich loam, and trained on a vertical shoot positioned trellis with 2–4 canes per vine and replacement spurs. Canopy and soil management is meticulous, with yields of 5–15 tonnes per hectare.

Winemaking

• 25% of the grapes are placed whole in 1000 kg bins for carbonic maceration over 10 days, producing a fruity, strawberry character.

• The remaining 75% is destemmed, lightly crushed, and fermented at 25 °C in stainless steel.

• After pressing, the non-carbonic portion is lightly oaked for 2 months in French oak before blending with the carbonic portion.

Tasting Note

Dark, rich, and potent, with concentrated layers of black cherry, raspberry, and cinnamon. Aromatics include fruit cake and spices, leading to a long, lingering finish.

Food Matching

Pairs with semi-hard cheeses, salmon, tuna, oven-roasted pork, duck, or turkey in red sauce.
