Founded in 1857, Buena Vista Winery is California’s oldest premium winery and a true pioneer of the state’s modern wine industry. Today, the historic estate continues its legacy under the vision of the Boisset family, who have restored the winery’s original cellars and reinvigorated the vineyards with a focus on sustainable, high-quality viticulture. Buena Vista’s philosophy is rooted in expressing site, heritage and authenticity, producing wines of elegance and character from prime California terroir.

Vineyards

The 2023 Pinot Noir is crafted from carefully selected vineyard parcels across California’s cooler coastal regions, where Pacific breezes and fog encourage slow, even ripening. These conditions preserve freshness, enhance aromatic nuance and allow Pinot Noir to develop its hallmark finesse. Soils range from marine sediment to volcanic composites, contributing complexity and subtle mineral tension to the finished wine.

Winemaking

Grapes are harvested at peak ripeness and gently destemmed before a cool maceration to enhance colour and delicate aromatics. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve purity, followed by ageing in a combination of French oak barrels—some new, but predominantly seasoned—bringing layered spice and roundness without overwhelming the fruit. The resulting style is vibrant, polished and unmistakably Californian.

Vintage Information – 2023

The 2023 growing season was marked by a cool spring and a long, steady ripening period. Warm but not extreme summer temperatures allowed for excellent flavour development and balanced natural acidity. Yields were healthy, fruit quality was exceptional and Pinot Noir particularly benefitted from the extended hang time, showing lifted aromatics, fine tannins and notable freshness.

Tasting Note

The 2023 Buena Vista Pinot Noir opens with bright red cherry, raspberry and fresh strawberry, supported by hints of rose petal, baking spice and a touch of vanilla from its measured oak ageing. The palate is silky and expressive, offering layers of juicy red fruit, gentle savoury undertones and beautifully integrated tannins. A lively thread of acidity carries the wine to a long, elegant, delicately spiced finish.
