Meerlust Estate Chardonnay is a refined expression of Chardonnay from the coastal Stellenbosch region, planted on soils from two of the estate’s distinctive terroirs: granitic slopes at Compagniesdrift and rocky greywacke and shale at Quarry. The combination of slow ripening from the cooling sea influence and the vineyard’s diverse soils gives the wine vibrant stone fruit and citrus flavours, lifted floral notes, and a pronounced minerality. Hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, the grapes undergo gentle pressing and barrel fermentation in a combination of new, second-fill, and third-fill 300L barrels, with a small portion fermented in concrete tanks. The wine is matured until it reaches desired structure and complexity, followed by light fining before bottling. The result is a bright, pale-yellow wine with green highlights, showing apricot, peach, pear, lemon zest, and toasted almond on the nose, and a structured, linear palate with crisp acidity, focused stone fruit, and a long, refreshing finish.

Meet the producer

Meerlust Estate has been in the hands of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, under the guidance of 8th-generation Hannes Myburgh and winemaker Wim Truter, the estate combines centuries of tradition with modern precision to craft elegant, terroir-driven wines from Stellenbosch.

Production

Grapes are hand-picked by experienced teams and pressed gently. Juice is settled overnight before barrel fermentation, carried out with selected or spontaneous yeast. Fermentation takes place in a mix of new, second-fill, and third-fill French oak barrels, with a small portion in concrete tanks. The wine is matured in barrel until desired structure and complexity are achieved, then lightly fined before bottling.

Tasting notes

Bright pale yellow with green highlights, the nose shows apricot, peach, pear, lemon zest, floral notes, and hints of toasted almonds. The palate is linear and structured, with focused stone fruit flavours, sleek minerality, crisp acidity, and a long, refreshing finish.
