Lagrein originates in Alto Adige, Italy, particularly around Bolzano and the historic Gries district. It is one of the region’s oldest native red grapes and remains a signature variety of northern Italy.
Lagrein typically shows blackberry, plum, black cherry, violet, cocoa, and spice with firm tannins and lively acidity. Dunkel styles are rich and structured, while Rosato (Kretzer) versions are fresher and more vibrant.
Lagrein is produced mainly as Lagrein Dunkel, a deep and structured red, and Lagrein Kretzer, a lighter rosato style. Both highlight the grape’s acidity and dark fruit character, but with different levels of intensity.
Lagrein pairs well with roast meats, game, stews, sausages, mushrooms, and Alpine dishes. Its tannins and acidity make it ideal for hearty cuisine from northern Italy and Central Europe.
