Groppello typically shows flavours of red cherry, strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate with notes of violets, herbs and gentle spice. It is light bodied with soft tannins and fresh acidity, giving it a delicate and elegant profile. Many styles are smooth, fragrant and easy to drink.
Groppello is primarily grown in Lombardy in northern Italy, especially around Lake Garda in the Valtènesi and Riviera del Garda Classico areas. The mild climate and lake influence help the grape retain freshness and aromatic charm. Plantings outside this region are limited.
Groppello can resemble Pinot Noir in its light body, bright red fruit and floral character. However, it often has a more Mediterranean profile with herbal notes and slightly softer tannins. Both grapes produce elegant, aromatic reds suited to lighter cuisine.
Groppello pairs well with pasta, pizza, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, seafood dishes and Mediterranean cuisine. Its freshness and gentle tannins complement dishes featuring tomatoes, herbs and olive oil. It also works beautifully with lighter plates and vegetarian dishes.
Groppello is used to produce light red wines, elegant rosés known as Chiaretto and fresh, aromatic blends. Most expressions focus on fragrance and delicacy, although some producers craft slightly fuller styles with extra depth and spice.
