To be legally classed as gin, the spirit must have a predominant flavour of juniper. While both gin and vodka begin as neutral spirit, gin is redistilled or infused with botanicals — with juniper at the forefront — whereas flavoured vodka simply has flavourings added. Without juniper leading the profile, it cannot be called gin.
Distilled gin is made by redistilling neutral spirit with botanicals, producing a clean, integrated flavour. Bathtub gin, also known as cold‑compounded gin, is made by steeping botanicals directly in spirit without redistillation. This method can create a more rustic, sometimes cloudy appearance and a bolder, less refined flavour profile. Distilled gin is the more regulated and widely recognised style.
Contemporary gins place less emphasis on juniper and highlight other botanicals such as citrus, florals or exotic spices. Traditional London Dry styles keep juniper firmly at the centre, with supporting botanicals adding structure rather than dominating. New‑wave gins are more experimental, often softer, fruitier or more aromatic, appealing to drinkers who prefer a modern twist.
Navy strength gin is bottled at around 57% ABV, a historic proof at which gunpowder would still ignite even if soaked with the spirit — a practical test used by the Royal Navy. Today, navy strength gins are prized for their intensity, bold botanical character and powerful flavour, making them excellent in cocktails where dilution is expected.
A garnish isn’t just decorative — it amplifies or complements the gin’s botanicals. Citrus can brighten a classic London Dry, herbs like rosemary or thyme can enhance savoury notes, and berries or florals can lift contemporary gins. The right garnish helps balance the drink, enhances aroma and can completely change the character of a G&T.
