Jynerva And Gorsedh - Organic Cornish Gins From Atlantic Distillery In Newquay

Yes ladies and gentleman, just when we thought our shelves couldn't possibly accommodate another Cornish gin a fair coastal wind blows two in from Newquay, Atlantic Distillery. They are called Jynerva Cornish Organic Gin and Gorsedh Cornish Organic Gin respectively. They come courtesy of our friends at the Atlantic Distillery, also more well known as the Atlantic Brewery. As a well established organic and vegetarian craft beer producer, the guys at Atlantic have turned their hand to the distillation of quality organic Cornish gin, a first for the county's burgeoning gin scene. The distillery is located in an 18th century farmhouse a short distance from the North Coast and the tourist town of Newquay itself. They started brewing beer in 2005 and now produce a varied selection of beers as part of their core range and a selection of Discovery Ales specially designed for pairing with food. With two gins now added to the portfolio, the sky's the limit for what we could see next. Jynerva, meaning gin in Cornish and Gorsedh, which is an organisation that preserves the Celtic spirituality of Cornwall, are a pair of 46% ABV hand crafted gins made from organic botanicals of which a great many are grown at the distillery or foraged from the wilds of Cornwall from coast to moor. The gins are blended with the distillery's own hand drawn water and distilled slowly in a bain marie still called Guinevere, so named after the famous character from Arthurian legend. Jynerva has a hint of orange on the nose but does not mask the juniper. These citrus flavours continue on the palate culminating in a dry finish. This is best served with strips of orange and lemon peel over ice together with a Fever Tree tonic. Gorsedh has been distilled using gorse flowers from an organic farm high on Bodmin Moor. This delivers a golden floral note on the nose with a hint of coconut and lime on the palate with a gentle, yet sustained, finish. Serve with lime peel strips, ice and Fever Tree Tonic.
