Spiced Rum

Spiced rum is a type of rum that has been infused with a blend of spices, herbs, and sometimes fruit peels to create a richer, more aromatic flavour profile. Typically made from molasses or sugarcane by-products, the base rum is aged and then enhanced with ingredients such as cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, vanilla, ginger, and star anise. The exact combination varies widely between distillers, allowing for a broad spectrum of taste—from sweet and warming to bold and peppery. Unlike flavoured rum, which focuses on single-note additions like coconut or mango, spiced rum delivers a layered complexity that makes it ideal for sipping neat, mixing into festive cocktails, or adding depth to classics like rum and cola. It’s especially popular in colder months, often associated with autumn and winter due to its warming character and historical ties to seafaring traditions.

In the UK and EU, a product can only be labelled rum if it is at least 37.5% ABV and contains no added flavourings or excessive sweetening. Because spiced rum includes added spices, botanicals and sometimes sugar, many versions fall outside the legal definition of rum. When this happens, they must be labelled as “spirit drinks” instead.

It depends on the producer. Many premium brands use real spices such as vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove or ginger. Others rely on natural or artificial flavourings to achieve a consistent profile. Regulations allow both approaches, so the best way to know is to check the label or the producer’s description.

Spiced rum is extremely versatile, and several mixers work beautifully. Popular alternatives include ginger beer, ginger ale, cloudy apple juice, pineapple juice, lemonade, or even tonic water for a drier, more aromatic serve. Store spiced rum in a cool, dark place, tightly sealed to preserve its flavour. Unlike wine, rum does not spoil once opened, but its aromatics can fade over time. When stored properly, an opened bottle will remain enjoyable for years, though the spice intensity may gradually soften.

“Navy Strength” refers to rum bottled at around 57% ABV, the proof at which gunpowder would still ignite if soaked with the spirit — a practical test used by the Royal Navy. While traditional Navy rum was not spiced, modern producers have combined the historic high‑proof style with spiced rum recipes, creating a bold, flavour‑packed category inspired by naval heritage.

Gold rum, also known as amber rum, is aged longer and has mellow notes of vanilla, caramel, and spice. Dark rum is deeply aged, rich, and full-bodied, ideal for sipping or adding depth to bold cocktails. Spiced rum is infused with warming spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove, making it a flavourful choice for mixed drinks. Overproof rum has a much higher alcohol content and is typically used sparingly in punches or flambé recipes. Additionally, agricole rum, made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, offers a grassy, earthy profile and is popular in French-speaking Caribbean regions.
