Rosemullion Distillery: A Family Business
Rosemullion Distillery is a family-run craft distiller of artisan Cornish gin, rum and spirits. Situated in their orchard near the Helford river the business was created by Andy & Liz a husband and wife team of chemists who decided to combine our scientific knowledge with their true passion for quality spirits.
Creating high-end products is their expertise, and love of good times with friends and family is a joy. The artisan distillery combines both these elements and we feel that luxury and happiness is reflected in each sip of the products.
Rosemullion's Story
When Andy & Liz decided to apply their expertise of creating high-end products into making quality spirits in their barn they had no idea it would turn into a thriving business. They only started out doing it for fun. But the results were surprisingly good, which is how Rosemullion Distillery came about. Who knew that from a Cornish orchard near to the Helford river they would be lucky enough to be able to create, grow and sustain our multi-award-winning distillery at the same time as raising a family!
Founded in 2018 Andy & Liz credit the growing success of Rosemullion Distillery to something essential: loving their products. Both of them are trained to take something and continually improve it until it is the absolute best that it can be. Marrying this pursuit of excellence with a passion for creating high-quality full-flavoured spirits swiftly resulted in increasing demands for their products and, to their delight, in winning lots of national and international awards. Naturally Andy & Liz enjoy winning but it is just an added bonus as they thoroughly love what they do. Rosemullion also like to share and support local Cornish concerns, from sports – such as Cornwall Rugby League and Helford River Gig club – to local artists, producers and festivals.
The gins, rums and whiskies have variously won platinum, silver and gold medals at the Sip Awards (California), San Francisco awards, Business International Rum Awards, the Great British Food Awards, the World Rum & Gin Awards, the World Spirits Competition and the International Wine & Spirits Competition, and it is their aim that they continue to do so.
Rosemullion's Gin
The flagship Rosemullion Dry Gin starts with Juniper & Coriander, with citrus, green herbs and a touch of well-integrated cassia, anise and liquorice. It has a fresh, juniper-driven nose with aromatics reminiscent of freshly trimmed cypress. Refreshing, crisp and simple to prepare. Rosemullion Summer Gin makes a perfect light refreshment for those in-between moments. Its citrus flavour marries beautifully with ice and tonic, flirts happily with strawberries and tastes particularly good when faced with a great view. Rosemullion Harvest Gin is a robust and distinctive character, and from the nose there’s hints of late season autumnal fruit (apple, plum, blackberry, raspberry and sloe) providing a deep sweet aroma that differentiates it from a classic gin. Seafarer’s Gin was inspired by the salty air and stormy seas that crash against the coastline of Cornwall. Made using a blend of botanicals found along the coast, and seaweed from the shoreline of Falmouth Bay.
Rosemullion's Rum
The rums are derived from molasses – These are 100% single pot distilled, meaning they maintain control over retaining the essential flavours created in the fermentation process. The rums are then oak-aged for a smooth profile. The Honey Rum is a perfect balance of botanicals and Southwest honey which complements the Cornish rum. The Rosemullion Spiced Rum is aged with a perfect balance of spices and works well with a good quality ginger ale and a squeeze of fresh lime. The Gold Rum is a perfect sipping rum and of course their Chocolate Rum is unspeakably delicious Dark Rum with chocolate, raspberry and mango. Rosemullion Dark Rum is a smooth easy drinking rum that works with ice, while the White Rum is supple and luxurious, with a smooth finish and – at 54.5% - the Navy Rum is strong!
Rosemullion's Whisky
Rosemullion Distillery whisky is produced with peated malt barley, fermented, pot distilled and aged on location in American oak creating a smooth, pleasant and easily drinkable 43% whisky. Its flavour is soft on the palate with a hint of malt and very light peat coming through with the oak flavour and aroma. Did you know that their Inaugural Release sold out in 5 minutes?!
Rosemullion's Drinks With A View
Rosemullion Distillery is a family business run from the buildings and land belonging to their own house on the Helford River. The Helford is an ecological treasure, studied by field biologists and marine conservationists, and adored by sailors, fisherman, swimmers, hikers, painters and gardeners alike. But it is also home to some of the local ingredients that they use in their drinks such as the seaweeds, samphire, the honey, the coriander and elderflower.
But of course the first local ingredient used to create their base spirits – is the Cornish rain, cleaned and purified. Andy & Liz also use a variety of Cornish seaweeds from the Cornish Seaweed Company. (A little sprig of sea spaghetti makes a great garnish for a homemade cocktail. You put it in place of the lime or grapefruit). They also use a hint of salt from the Cornish Sea Salt Company, giving a particularly nice flavour to Rosemullion products due in part to the elements of the rocks and the elements of the water flow in and around the Lizard which is where they create the sea salt. Some of the fruit we use to flavour our products comes from their 19th century orchard, including a well-established grapevine. Andy & Liz take the grapes and dry them out to use them for the rum and raisin infused Christmas spirit and fruit from the orchard, such as apples and Victoria plums make it into the much-loved Harvest Gin.
Here at the Helford, the noises around the shores are inevitably of people (and often their dogs too) having fun. As a family, at Rosemullion Distillery, we wanted to bottle the essence of springs and summers spent largely barefoot on beaches and rocks, and autumns and winters mucking about in boots and wellies in the woods and creeks, in the gins, rums and whisky. You can clearly tell Andy & Liz love where they live, and they love what they make.
