This smooth and elegant whisky is from Scotland's young distillery Nc'nean who are leaders of organic and sustainable made whisky. This is an easy going whisky and packed with flavours of citrus, peach, apricot and spice. This stunner has been matured in specially treated red wine and American whiskey barrels to develop the spirits signature body and sweetness.
Nc'nean is a young, independent, organic whisky distillery on the West coast of Scotland. Founder Annabel Thomas raised nearly £7.5 million to start the distillery from the ground up. The small 100,000 LPA (litres of pure alcohol) distillery was completed in March 2017 and has been producing organic spirit ever since. The house style is light and fruity and they now have over 1,800 ex-bourbon, STR red wine and ex-sherry casks maturing in their warehouse (as of 2020).
The ethos and their mission is to create experimental spirits and pioneer sustainable production. A quiet challenge to the norms of Scotch, with a focus on flavour at the forefront.
"I started Nc'nean to change the way the world thinks about whisky from Scotland. To create light and delicious spirits which can exist in harmony with this planet we call home. Creative and curious, we are not afraid to walk our own path. We use organic Scottish barley, in a distillery powered by renewable energy. Our name, pronounced Nc-nee-an, is an abbreviation of Neachneohain, known as the Queen of Spirits in Gaelic legend, and our guiding star. She was a huntress, a fierce protector of nature and never afraid to walk her own path. We try to follow this ethos in everything we do." - Annabel
The Nc'nean distillery is also passionate about sustainability which is embedded in everything they do. They are Scotland's leading organic whisky distillery, sourcing certified organic barley from 10 Scottish farmers. The distillery only uses renewable sources for energy which are a combination of a biomass boiler that is run on timber from the local forest, and renewable electricity. The use of the natural cooling pond means that all the rainwater which is used for cooling the stills can be recycled over and over again! This distillery really are leading the way and are a zero waste distillery. In 2019 alone they reused or recycled 99.97% of their waste produced and the 2020 aim is for it to be 100%! Any leftover grain feeds the cows on the farm and the waste products are spread on the fields are fertilizer!
