Charge Into Battle With Rebel Yell Whiskey

This month we welcome a new arrival: a selection of Rebel Yell American whiskies. The name is steeped in history — and controversy — referencing the Confederate battle cry from the American Civil War, not the Billy Idol song (though legend has it the song was inspired by the whiskey, introduced to Idol by Keith Richards). Originally distributed only in the American South, Rebel Yell has since found its way to a global audience.

While the label claims an 1849 heritage, the real story begins in the mid-1800s when bourbon pioneer William Weller pioneered wheat-forward recipes in place of rye. The Rebel Yell brand itself wasn’t formally established until 1936, when it began production at the legendary Stitzel-Weller distillery in Louisville, Kentucky — also home to iconic names like W.L. Weller, Old Fitzgerald and Old Rip Van Winkle. After the distillery’s closure in the early 1990s, most of its brands were acquired by Buffalo Trace and Heaven Hill. Rebel Yell is now owned by Luxco and produced under contract at Heaven Hill. Meanwhile, the original Stitzel-Weller site has been reborn and now produces Bulleit whiskey.

Rebel Yell Straight Bourbon

Made from a wheat and corn mash bill, Rebel Yell Straight Bourbon has a light caramel hue, hinting at its youthful age (reportedly around four years, though unconfirmed). On the nose, vanilla, honey, corn and hints of orange peel and raisin emerge. The palate is spicy and sweet with notes of charred caramel and more raisins. The finish is short, peppery and sweet. At around £25, this isn’t a premium pour — but it's not trying to be. Ideal for mixing, cocktails, or casual sipping over ice, it offers solid everyday value.

Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve

A step up in the range, Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve is likely a slightly older version of the Straight Bourbon, bottled at a higher strength. It pours a medium butterscotch colour and delivers a soft, sweet nose full of honey and subtle oak. The palate is smooth and rich with caramel, orange peel and minimal spice. The finish is short, pleasant, and lightly oaked. For just a few pounds more, this is a noticeable upgrade in quality and drinkability — approachable neat or on the rocks, and a reliable choice when entertaining.

Rebel Yell Small Batch Rye

This approachable rye whiskey balances spice and sweetness, making it a great base for cocktails like an Old Fashioned. On the nose, expect spice, caramel, citrus and herbs. The palate carries more spice than expected, with touches of dill, caramel and vanilla, leading into a dry, woody finish. Though relatively young, this rye delivers impressive flavour and value. It’s not the most complex dram, but it is enjoyable, easy to drink and priced well below many competitors.
