Tennessee Whiskey

12 Item(s)

It was the Scottish and Irish distillers who first introduced America to the delightful nectar that is whiskey. American whiskey often possesses a sort of tangy top note coupled with rustic qualities. This is thanks to the use of virgin oak casks to mature the majority of their whiskeys. If you’re looking to buy whiskey and are yet to sample what the state of Tennessee has to offer, look no further than our selection!

Tennessee whiskey is a sour mash that’s filtered through sugar maple charcoal before the ageing process. This method is known as the Lincoln County Process, but due to boundary changes, Tennessee whiskey is technically no longer produced in Lincoln County. There are only two brands that make Tennessee whiskey: Jack Daniel's and George Dickel.

The Best-Selling Brand is a Tennessee Whiskey

Jack Daniel’s is the world’s best-selling American whiskey brand and the second most popular whiskey brand overall. It is often mistaken for a bourbon, but it’s very much a quintessential Tennessee whiskey due to its charcoal-smooth character. Jack Daniel’s humble image and delicious taste have made it a go-to choice for casual sippers and devoted Tennessee whiskey connoisseurs alike.

Lynchburg, the home of Jack Daniel’s, is a small town in the south central region of Tennessee. But funnily enough, it’s also a dry town, meaning that you won’t be able to taste the whiskey there, even in the distillery.

What’s the Difference Between Tennessee Whiskey and Bourbon?

Both bourbon and Tennessee whiskey are made using at least 51% corn, but the latter must go through the Lincoln County Process for maturation. It’s for this reason that Jack Daniel’s and George Dickel cannot be considered a bourbon.

In regards to style, several aspects make Tennessee whiskey different from bourbon. The most distinct difference between the two is the charcoal ‘mellowing’ (Lincoln County Process) of Tennessee whiskey that occurs before it is filled into a barrel. During this process, the spirit is filtered through 10 feet of sugar-maple charcoal, removing impurities and giving the finished product a subtly unique character that is smoother than bourbon. Tennessee whiskey also tends to have less rye in the mash bill.

When it comes to taste notes, you can expect to find hints of toffee, fruit cake, vanilla, and oak among the style and characteristics of Tennessee whiskey. This combination of flavours provides a finish that is both smooth and delicious.
