Rye whiskey is famous for its rich, spicy flavour and a distinct bitter finish that makes it distinct from other American whiskies. While these traits differ from the much-loved smoothness and sweeter characteristics of bourbon and Tennessee whiskey, you’ll find that the spicier flavours soon mellow into new levels of complexity. Are you looking to buy rye whiskey online? You’re most definitely in the right place!

History of Rye Whiskey

For many years, rye whiskey was the most prevalent and popular whiskey in the northeastern states, such as Maryland and Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the central hub for rye whiskey production in the 1700s and early 1800s. By the 1880s, the Moore and Sinnott distillery, located in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, was the largest producer of rye whiskey, producing 30,000 barrels a year.

More recently, rye whiskey has enjoyed a small but progressive revival in the United States. Since the start of the 21st century, more distilleries have been experimenting with rye whiskey, and many brands now sell aged rye whiskey. For example, Jack Daniel's created a rye whiskey and have since released unaged and lightly aged versions as limited editions.

The Perfect Spirit for Cocktails

American whiskey is synonymous with the cocktail. Nearly all of the classic recipes were or are based around it, including the Old-Fashioned, Manhattan and the Sazerac. Rye whiskey is the base spirit of many of the most well-known classic cocktails, such as the Manhattan. As a legal requirement, rye whiskey must have a mash bill that consists of at least 51% rye grains.

What’s the Difference Between Rye Whiskey and Bourbon?

Rye grain provides the whiskey with what many describe as a fruity or spicy flavour. Bourbon is considerably sweeter and usually more full-bodied than rye and is distilled from at least 51% corn. As bourbon became more popular beyond the southern states, bartenders began to substitute it for rye in cocktails like Whiskey Sours and Old Fashioneds, which were initially made with rye whiskey. While both whiskies will serve you well as a base spirit, if you’re someone who prefers a drier cocktail, the character of the cocktail will be less sweet with rye whiskey.
