  • Taylors Quinta de Vargellas 2002 20.5% 75cl
Quinta de Vargellas is arguably the most renowned and prestigious estate in the Douro Valley. The reputation of its wines dates back to the 1820s. Quinta is the Portuguese for a farm or estate.
Since its purchase by Taylors over a century ago, the wines of Vargellas have formed the backbone of the legendary Taylors vintage ports. In certain years, however, when a Taylor Vintage is not declared, the best wine of Vargellas has traditionally been bottled as a single-Quinta vintage port.
These elegant, scented vintages were initially bottled for the partners own cellar.
However Taylors was later to become the earliest shipper to develop a market for this increasingly important category of vintage port. Released when ready to drink, Quinta de Vargellas offers an exceptional opportunity to buy top-flight vintage ports at a very reasonable price.
Inky, almost purple-black in colour, the nose is very fragrant and perfumed with atractive scents of violets and cedarwood. The palate is full, soft and velvety with rich cedar and spice flavours. Good concentration with well balanced fruit and tannins and a delicious long finish.

  • Grahams Malvedos 2001 Port 20% 75cl
The quality of the wines from the Malvedos vineyard is such that in Vintage declarations these wines provide the main structure for Grahams classic Vintage Ports. In most of the interim years, the wines from Malvedos will merit bottling as a single estate, or single quinta Vintage Port from a single harvest.

Grahams Malvedos Vintage Ports admirably show the Grahams house style with their expressive floral characteristics, opulent black berry fruit flavours and racy flair. They are usually more approachable when young than classic Vintage Ports and therefore make an excellent alternative to the latter while one waits for these to fully mature.

Grahams Malvedos Vintage Ports have won a simply astonishing collection of awards at the worlds major international wine competitions over recent years, clearly outperforming other producers. In the International Wine Challenge alone, Malvedos Vintage Ports have won an impressive (and unrivalled) 5 gold and 11 silver medals.

The 1988 Malvedos was the first ever Port (and in fact, the first ever Portuguese wine) to be ranked in the prestigious Wine Spectators annual Top 100 wines of the world classification. It also won gold medals for two consecutive years at the London International Wine Challenge.

1999 was the largest vintage since 1996 and turned out to be a useful vintage for the trade with some small quantities of outstanding single quinta wines. Not a general declaration.

Gorgeous bouquet redolent of chocolate, mint and spice. Luxurious and lusty palate, showing cassis and layers of blackcurrant and black
plum. Big and bold but in a very polished, attractive manner.

Image is 1999 vintage for representation purposes only.

  • Niepoort LBV 2012 Port 20% 75cl
Late Bottled Vintage port is from a single year. The wine ages 4-6 years in old oak casks (opposed to Vintage that ages 2-3). LBV fills the gap between the rubies and the vintage ports since a Ruby Port should be drunk quite young and a great Vintage Port may need 15 to 20 years to really open up and show its splendour. This led to the idea in the 1960s to age the wine 4 to 6 years in large casks before bottling it, thereby producing a wine with the style of a Vintage Port with its deep colour and concentration of fruit but with a more mature character caused by the longer ageing in wood.

Brilliant red colour with a wonderful aroma of dark fruits and a classy touch of chocolate. On the palate sweet grainy seductive tannins give the wine a superb elegance and interact well with the fruit and fine spirity finish.
The wine can be enjoyed now, and will become more complex with further cellaring for a couple of decades.
To fully benefit from its qualities we recommend it be decanted before serving. Serve with soft cheeses, mild blue cheese, dark chocolate desserts or a pepper steak!
    £19.45

schist, from the silence, for our enjoyment.
    VINIFICATION
Made from high-quality wines of the Quinta de Ervamoira by blending harvests of different years. The new wines make it robust and fresh while the oldest wines give it complexity and lineage. Its characteristic aroma and palate are the result of the artistry achieved by the head of our Tasting Room.
    TASTING NOTES
Orange-red in colour with a touch of green. A well-rounded, generous aroma with balance and a hint of wine. Fruit aromas include orange, apricot and plum. Vanilla and old Port wine casks make up its woody aromas. This is a fruity tawny variety.
In the mouth, one can still taste the fresh fruit surrounded by the ageing in wood. A good structure and perfect balance between fruit and alcohol.
The attack on the palate is smooth and full-bodied. Following the initial oily feel, a fresh, soft fruitiness appears which finishes with a slightly acidic, woody note.
