The elegance, aromatic complexity and precise flavours of Champagne make it near impossible for any other sparkling wine to rival. For decades, the sound of a Champagne cork popping has been associated with celebration, good times, and a general sense of happiness — so it’s easy to see why many wine connoisseurs continue to buy the finest Champagne when celebrating special occasions.

Vintage and Non-Vintage Champagne

The critical difference between non-vintage and vintage Champagne isn’t that the latter is old, but that it’s made from grapes that were only grown during one year of harvest. For a bottle of Champagne to be an authentic vintage it must be 100% made from grapes of the year stated on its label, whereas non-vintage Champagne is produced using a blend of grapes that were grown over several years of harvesting.

While there’s no doubt that vintage Champagne is a bespoke, high-quality product, this doesn’t mean that non-vintage Champagnes are to be scoffed at. Vintage Champagnes are only produced three or four times a decade, whereas ‘house style’ non-vintage Champagnes are released by Champagne houses every year, giving wine connoisseurs the opportunity to buy and sample different varieties of Champagne on a regular basis.

Rosé Champagne

Rosé wines are created by leaving white grapes in the juice of red grapes for a small amount of time, to soften their skins and extract natural colourings. Rosé Champagne, however, is made by adding a small amount of red wine – usually Pinot Noir – during the blending process.

Adding red wine gives rosé champagne a pink appearance that makes it somewhat of a novelty, and it also provides the best of both worlds in regards to the taste and characteristics of Champagne and red wine. Wine connoisseurs tend to buy Rosé Champagne when looking for a unique wine for a special occasion, as the delightful flavour of the blend makes it appealing to many.
