Description
Casa Ermelinda Freitas is a distinguished fourth-generation family winery situated in Fernando Pó on Portugal’s Setúbal Peninsula, south of Lisbon. Under the leadership of Leonor Freitas, the winery began bottling under its own label in 1997 following significant investment in modern facilities. Spanning 240 hectares, the estate dedicates 160 hectares to Castelão, locally known as Periquita, while the remaining vineyards cultivate red varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Syrah, and Alicante Bouschet, alongside whites like Fernão Pires and Chardonnay. The region’s Mediterranean climate, characterised by hot summers, cool winters, and over 300 hours of sunshine per month, plays a vital role in producing distinctive, high-quality wines.
This wine showcases a deep violet hue, with intense aromas of blackberries and black plums, complemented by delicate notes of violets and spices. On the palate, it is rich and complex, revealing the presence of fine herbs and a touch of cocoa, accompanied by hints of mint, violet, and the gentle sweetness of vanilla imparted by oak ageing. Concentrated and well-structured, it features velvety, seamlessly integrated tannins, ensuring a refined and harmonious finish.
